Global political and military circles are focused on the growing tension between Iran and the US, where a comparison of both countries’ armed forces’ strength has gained importance in the event of a potential broader conflict. The US ranks first in military power, Iran 16th; Tehran has 1,713 tanks, Washington 4,640; US defense budget $895 billion, US has 13,000 modern aircraft, Iran only 551-560 old aircraft; Washington’s financial superiority 60 times greater; Iran has 850,000 active and 200,000 reserve personnel, US has 1.3 million active and 766,000 reserve personnel.
Despite the US’s global military superiority, Iran’s unconventional strategy and missile capabilities make it a dangerous adversary, which could complicate and prolong any regional conflict. Iran is among the top 20 military powers globally and ranks 16th out of 145 countries according to Global Firepower, while the US is first. Iran’s annual defense budget is $15.5 billion, just a fraction of the US’s $895 billion expenditure.
According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Iran’s armed forces include 580,000 active personnel and 200,000 trained reserves. In comparison, the US military has about 1.3 million active personnel and 766,000 reserves, per Global Firepower.
On land power, Iran has 1,713 tanks while the US Army has 4,640 tanks, and against Iran’s 65,825 armored vehicles, US forces have 391,963 armored vehicles. Global Firepower data also shows Iran has more towed artillery (2,070 vs 1,212) and more mobile rocket projectors (1,517 vs 641) than the US Army, but Iran lags far behind the US in naval and air capabilities.
In the air sector, the US has over 13,000 modern aircraft including the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, while Iran’s air force consists of only 550–560 old aircraft, leaving it vulnerable in air warfare. The naval disparity is also clear; the US Navy has 11 aircraft carriers and 81 destroyers, while Iran has no carriers or destroyers.
Iran’s greatest strength is its missile arsenal, including the largest number of ballistic missiles in the Middle East, capable of targeting US bases and allied countries. The US has 25-30 thousand missiles; however, Iran’s strategy focused on missiles, drones, and proxy militias enables it to compete despite conventional weaknesses.
Financially, the US leads globally with a nearly $895 billion defense budget, while Iran’s is only about $15 billion, giving Washington nearly 60 times financial superiority. In nuclear capability, the US is a recognized superpower, while Iran has no nuclear weapons.
