US President Donald Trump has stated that Greenland is extremely important for America’s national security. If other countries do not support US control over Greenland, he can impose trade tariffs on them.
In a conversation at the White House yesterday, Trump said that Greenland’s strategic geographical position and mineral resources are essential for the US. He further claimed that if America does not take control of Greenland, a major gap in national security will emerge, and discussions on this matter are ongoing with NATO.
On this issue, US Senator Chris Coons said that most statements made in Washington are mere rhetoric, and in reality, Greenland is an ally, not property.
Meanwhile, officials from Denmark and Greenland have rejected US claims, stating that the decision on Greenland’s future can only be made by Denmark and the people of Greenland. Denmark has also announced plans to increase its military presence in Greenland in collaboration with allied countries.
Major General Søren Andersen, head of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Greenland, said in a statement that their focus is not on America but on potential Russian activities; the idea of military conflict among NATO allies is unthinkable.
On the other hand, Trump’s special envoy for Greenland, Jeff Landry, has announced that he will visit Greenland in March and hopes an agreement can be reached on this matter. However, Denmark has clearly stated that US control over Greenland is a “red line” for them.
