The government of Greenland has announced that it will not accept U.S. attempts to seize control of its vast territory under any circumstances, and it will intensify efforts to ensure the defense of these areas within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The government also stated that, given the highly positive stance of NATO’s six member states on Greenland, it will accelerate efforts to include Greenland’s defense within the NATO framework. Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen’s government emphasized that Greenland’s firm intention is to remain part of the Western defense alliance.
This development comes after U.S. President Donald Trump reconfirmed on Sunday his country’s desire to acquire the Danish-administered territory of Greenland. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he said that if the U.S. does not take Greenland, Russia or China will, and he will not allow that to happen. He urged the Arctic island to strike a deal with him.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources report that Trump administration officials will meet with Danish officials next Wednesday to discuss the Greenland issue. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had clarified before Congress last week that Trump is interested in purchasing the Danish territory.
