Three-time Grand Slam singles champion Stan Wawrinka revealed that 2026 will be his last year on the professional circuit, as he seeks to bow out “on the best note possible.”
“Every book needs an ending. It’s time to write the final chapter of my pro tennis career. 2026 will be my last year on tour,” Wawrinka wrote on social media Friday.
Turning 41 in March, Wawrinka triumphed at the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015, and the US Open in 2016, breaking through during the era when Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic ruled men’s tennis.
He has captured 16 ATP titles, with his most recent in Geneva back in 2017. Wawrinka peaked at world No. 3 in 2014 but has battled injuries lately, dropping to No. 157 in the rankings.
His 582 tour-level victories rank fourth among active players, trailing only Gael Monfils, who also plans to retire at the end of next year.
Beyond his majors, Wawrinka claimed Olympic doubles gold with Federer at the 2008 Beijing Games and spearheaded Switzerland’s first Davis Cup win in 2014.
He’ll launch his farewell season in Perth at the United Cup, starting January 2.
