Although US President Donald Trump expressed openness to dialogue with Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez, he still posted an image of himself on his “Truth Social” account with the caption: “Interim President of Venezuela.” This came despite Trump assuring journalists on Monday that his administration is working well with the interim president and remains open to meeting her.
On Air Force One, President Trump told reporters: “Things with Venezuela are going well… We’re doing very well with the leadership.” When asked if he plans to meet Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez (who previously served as Vice President under Nicolás Maduro), Trump replied: “I will do that at some point.”
Notably, Rodríguez took the oath as interim president on January 4 following the arrest of Maduro and his wife, and has since initiated multiple rounds of negotiations with Washington, particularly to leverage Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, as reported by Agence France-Presse. Additionally, Caracas announced an investigative process to restart relations with the US, which were severed after 2019, while clarifying it will not come under Washington’s cautious influence.
