Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a formal disqualification reference against Senator Saifullah Abro with Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, accusing him of defecting by voting for the 27th Constitutional Amendment despite party opposition.
PTI Senator Ali Zafar shared the defection declaration on X, stating Abro breached party directives by supporting the amendment. The Senate vote occurred on November 10, 2025, when Abro sided with the measure against PTI’s stance.
In the reference, PTI’s Senate parliamentary leader declared: “Under Article 63A of the Constitution, as PTI’s parliamentary leader/party head, I confirm Senator Saifullah Abro has defected from PTI.” He requested the Senate chairman forward it to the Chief Election Commissioner for Election Commission review.
Zafar noted a pre-vote PTI parliamentary meeting explicitly instructed senators—via written notice—to oppose all 27th Amendment bills. “Records show Abro received and understood these directions,” he added.
‘PTI didn’t oppose amendment,’ claims Abro
Speaking to Geo News, Abro denied opposition to the amendment and criticized Zafar’s reference: “Ali Zafar isn’t fit to lead.” He insisted: “No party letter or show-cause notice reached me.”
Mocking PTI, Abro said: “It’s a social media party now—they post online but send nothing.” He alleged PTI founder Imran Khan nominated him for Senate standing committee on interior chairmanship, but party members colluded with treasury benches to block it.
