Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) leader Hafiz Hamdullah says he has no intention of a second marriage, but if he gets angry and has to break the law, he will marry a 16-year-old girl.
Speaking to the media outside Parliament House in Islamabad, Hafiz Hamdullah advised JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to arrange mass weddings in all four provinces upon returning from his foreign tour. He said that mass weddings should involve young people who have reached puberty and are under 18 years old. Marriage at a young age is not invalid; it is only a legal crime—the court allowed a 15-year-old girl to live with her husband.
Hafiz Hamdullah said we will trample such laws underfoot because we will not accept any law that contradicts the Quran and Sunnah; this is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He stated that the Constitution stipulates that no law shall be made against the Quran and Sunnah. Hafiz Hamdullah further said that those who sat in Parliament and rebelled against the Constitution should be charged under Article 6, while Maulana Sahib is doing everything in accordance with the Constitution. He added that although he is not in the mood for a second marriage, if he gets angry, he too will marry a 16-year-old girl.
