Pakistan faced a sharp escalation in militancy last year, with terrorist attacks jumping 34% to 699 and deaths rising 21% to 1,034—even as militants suffered record losses—per the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) Pakistan Security Report 2025, released Thursday.
The violence wounded 1,366 others, fueling concerns since the Taliban’s 2021 Afghanistan takeover. Over 95% of attacks hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan.
Security forces took the brunt, comprising 42% of fatalities (437 killed). Civilians suffered 597 deaths; 243 militants died in suicide blasts or counterstrikes.

Balochistan: Coordinated Shift
The province saw 254 attacks (26% up), 419 deaths, and 607 injuries. Groups like Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) evolved from hit-and-runs to sieges, blockades, and hijackings targeting infrastructure and state symbols.
