The Central Hilal Sighting Committee meeting to sight the Ramadan moon will be held today in Peshawar.
According to SUPARCO spokesperson, the first fast is likely on Thursday, February 19; the new moon has been born, and at sunset today, the moon’s age will be approximately 25 hours and 48 minutes, making it likely visible to the naked eye.
The final announcement regarding the sighting of the Ramadan moon will be made by Chairman of the Central Hilal Sighting Committee, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.
It may be recalled that the first fast is being observed today in Arab countries including Saudi Arabia; the first Taraweeh prayers were offered in Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi, during which a soul-refreshing gathering of thousands of pilgrims and worshippers was witnessed.
Thousands of Muslims from around the world prostrated in the divine court, offering prayers of gratitude for the arrival of Ramadan and seeking forgiveness.
Meanwhile, the Muslim community in Britain and Europe is divided this year as well. Those following the calendar will fast today, while those adhering to sighting will fast on Thursday.
