Following the ICC’s ejection of Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup for refusing to play in India, Pakistan’s cricket team’s participation in the event remains uncertain.
The ICC has announced Pakistan’s squad for the T20 World Cup, but will Pakistan participate? PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to hold an important meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today for consultations on this matter.
Sources say the meeting will discuss whether or not to participate in the T20 World Cup.
Sources indicate that consultations with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar have also been decided regarding participation or non-participation in the T20 World Cup. On this matter, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that consultations are underway, the government will play its role, and the public will be informed of whatever decision is made.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s stance is principle-based and rejects the ICC’s double standards.
Mohsin Naqvi stated that politicized cricket is not in anyone’s interest; everyone should adhere to cricket’s principles. Our players are capable and know how to compete in every aspect; success in any field comes from teamwork. Previously, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had said they are more answerable to the Government of Pakistan than the ICC, and the decision on T20 World Cup participation will be made by the Government of Pakistan.
It may be recalled that a few days ago, the Bangladesh Cricket Board refused to travel to India for T20 World Cup matches citing security concerns. The Bangladesh board’s position was that their matches should be shifted to Sri Lanka due to security fears.
However, the ICC rejected the Bangladesh board’s stance and replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in the mega event. In recent days, sources reported that if Bangladesh refuses to participate in the World Cup, Pakistan might also boycott.
It is clear that the T20 World Cup is set to begin on February 7, with Pakistan’s matches scheduled in Sri Lanka.
